How Thick Should a Concrete Driveway Be in Albany, NY?

A concrete driveway in Albany, NY should be poured at least 5 inches thick, on a compacted gravel base, with reinforcement and control joints cut the same day. Four inches is the code minimum for a sidewalk or patio. It is not enough for a slab that carries a pickup, a plow truck or a delivery van through a Capital District winter.

Why 5 inches and not 4

Concrete strength goes up fast with thickness. A 5 inch slab carries roughly 50 percent more load than a 4 inch slab of the same mix. The extra inch costs a little more concrete and nothing more in labor, and it is the difference between a driveway that holds up for 30 years and one that cracks at the apron in year five. If you park a heavy trailer or expect oil deliveries, we go to 6 inches at the apron and the parking area.

The base matters more than the slab

Most driveway failures we see around Albany, Colonie and Loudonville are base failures. Clay soil holds water, water freezes, and the slab heaves. We strip the topsoil, bring in 4 to 6 inches of crusher run, compact it in lifts and check grade so water runs away from the garage. A thick slab on a soft base still cracks. A properly compacted base under a 5 inch slab rarely does.

Reinforcement and joints

We use fiber mesh in the mix plus wire mesh or rebar depending on the span and the load. Control joints get cut every 8 to 10 feet in both directions, no later than the next morning. Those joints are where the slab is supposed to crack, which is why a well jointed driveway looks clean for decades.

Curing in Capital District weather

Keep cars off a new driveway for 7 days and trucks off for 28. Do not use rock salt the first winter. Calcium chloride or sand is fine. A cure and seal applied after the pour slows moisture loss and gives you a stronger surface heading into the first freeze.
