Stamped Concrete vs Pavers for a Clifton Park Patio

Ashlar slate stamped concrete patio by Edges Unlimited in Saratoga Springs, NY

Homeowners in Clifton Park ask us this one a lot. Stamped concrete and pavers can end up looking similar from the kitchen window, but they behave differently underfoot, in winter and on the invoice. Here is the short version.

Cost

Stamped concrete in the Capital Region typically runs $18 to $28 per square foot installed. Pavers usually land $22 to $35 per square foot once you count the base prep, edge restraint and polymeric sand. On a 400 square foot patio that gap is real money.

Winter

Both handle freeze and thaw if the base is compacted right. Pavers can heave individually and need resetting. A stamped slab moves as one piece and relies on control joints to manage cracking. Keep de-icing salt off either one the first winter.

Upkeep

Stamped concrete wants a reseal every two to three years. Pavers want weeding, sand top-ups and the occasional reset. Neither is maintenance free.

Our take

If you want a seamless surface with custom color and a lower install cost, stamped concrete wins. If you expect to pull up part of the patio later for a gas line or a new footing, pavers are easier to repair in sections. We do both conversations at the estimate, not after.
