Faded stamped concrete in Troy, NY can almost always be restored. The pattern is still in the slab. What is gone is the sealer and the top layer of color, and both can be put back with a clean, a color-matched stain and a fresh seal. Restoration costs a fraction of a new pour and takes one to two days.
What fades and why
Stamped concrete gets its look from two colors, a base color mixed in or broadcast on the surface and an antique release that sits in the low spots of the pattern. Sun, salt and foot traffic wear the sealer off first, then the antique color washes out of the grooves, and the slab goes flat and gray. Patios in Brunswick and Wynantskill that face south fade fastest.
The restoration process
- Pressure wash and strip any failed sealer.
- Repair chips, spalls and surface cracks.
- Apply an antique stain or tinted sealer matched to the original color, working it into the pattern lines.
- Seal with a solvent based sealer, non-slip additive on steps and pool decks.
When restoration is not the answer
If the slab is heaved, badly cracked through or has lost the stamp pattern from years of salt, staining will not hide it. In that case we talk about an overlay or a new pour. We will tell you which one you are looking at before you spend anything.
